Migrants’ remittances play an important role in improving household welfare. Using the latest household survey data from 2010, this study observes the probability of receiving remittances at the household level. Since remittances are a potential substitute for domestic income, the impact of remittances on poverty and inequality is examined using counterfactual scenarios. Results show that the probability of receiving remittances is higher in richer households than poorer households. Remittances contribute twenty percentages of total poverty headcount ratio reduction in Nepal. The role of international remittance is greater than that of internal remittance in decreasing the poverty headcount, the poverty gap and the squared poverty gap.
