内容記述 This paper examines how Romani-Hungarian bilingual speakers in Hungary perceive their language and ethnic belonging. Little attention has been paid to the Romani speakers in Hungary, on the grounds that most Roms are linguistically assimilated into Hungarian monolinguals. Due to the ‘Roma’ nation building on-going domestically and internationally, the Roms tend to be treated as homogeneous. Consequently, little is known about the sentiments of Romani speakers concerning their language and identification. Since there are two major dialects of Romani in Hungary, Vlax and Carpathian, the author compared and analyzed the descriptions of their language/dialect and of ‘us’ and ‘them’, first from published books by these two dialect speakers, then from interview data of them, applying a framework of semiotic processes of language ideology of differentiation, iconization, fractal recursivity and erasure, proposed by Irvine and Gal. The results of the comparison showed that all the Vlax informants embraced transnational Romaness while Carpathian ones were varied - some embraced Hungarian-Roma identity and others shared affinity with Vlax speakers. The analysis revealed that those who differentiated their own dialect as the authentic one created a dichotomous relationship such as Roms versus non-Roms within the Roms themselves while those who emphasized linguistic similarity and mutual comprehensibility between the dialects had a sense of transnational Roma-ness. The findings suggest that the Roma-ness is linked with and supported by the Romani language ideology, “all dialects are equal”.
