Recently, it has been recognized that help seeking is useful coping strategy for peer harassment. However, help seeking is not always effective coping because nonadaptive help seeking may deteriorate victimization of peer harassment. Although many researchers regard help seeking as an adaptive coping strategy, it is needed to reconsider conception of help seeking as involving adaptive and nonadaptive aspect. Therefore, the purpose of this articles is to overview studies about help seeking, and to organize adaptive and non adaptive help seeking by referring to Newman (2006, 2008a) and Nagai (2013). As a result of this review, help seeking can be classified in adaptive help seeking (self directed help-seeking), adependent help seeking (excessive help-seeking), and avoidance of help seeking (avoidant help-seeking) according to necessary of help. In addition, it is suggested that avoidance of help is differentiated from avoidance of help seeking.
