 note = {Taking the analysis by Tanaka (2014) as a point of departure, this paper investigates the relative order between objects and adverbs in Old English (OE) finite clauses, and attempts to account for the results of the investigation in terms of object movement and the hierarchical structure of functional categories in the left periphery of the vP domain. Assuming the distinction between positive objects and quantified objects, it is shown by the investigation based on an OE corpus that quantified objects can appear before vP/VP adverbs, but not before discourse/temporal adverbs, while positive objects can precede both types of adverbs. Then, it is argued that quantified objects and positive objects move to [Spec, Foc(us)P] and [Spec, Top(ic)P], respectively, in the left periphery of the vP domain where Foc is sandwiched between two instances of Top. Finally, this paper touches upon the loss of the hierarchical structure of functional categories in the left periphery of the vP domain after Middle English, suggesting a separate cause for Top and Foc.},
