An alternating potential proportional to the field is generated by the measuring head and then amplified. The amplified potential is fed to three recording units. When the discharge occurs, the first of them photographs the image appearing on the screen of C. R. T., and indicating the alternating potential on a 35 mm film frame, the second of them tape-records the alternating potential continuously and the third records the potential detected through a phase-sensitive detector on a continuous recording meter. The first way gives the fine structure of field change accompanied by lightning discharge which has produced the atmospheric wave form corresponding to the change, the second the whole behavior of the field variation of a discharge with sufficiently high resolving power up to 0.5 ms., and the third slow but long field variation produced by the movement of charged cloud and the sign of the field at the same time. The apparatus can be applied to obtain the simultaneous records of an electric field correspondnig to the above three mthods together with other records, for example, an atmospheric waveform emitted by lightning discharge.
