 note = {The purpose of the present research is to show in what aspects the inhabitants of a socalled "Kaso" (too-thinly peopled) community grasp the "changes" of their community, on the basis of the personal interview data obtained at Kamimura, Nagano Prefecture, one of those too-thinly peopled communities in Japan. Using the 'Key-words' method in analyzing the data, the author picked out the comments including the Key-words, such as "In former days..., while nowadays..." and all of the same kind, and classified them. Here is the result of the analysis in decreasing order; on the whole, the inhabitants grasp the "changes" of their community in the aspects of : 1. the mode of life (a rise of the standard of living, an improvement of food life, etc.) 2. agriculture (aggravation of management, changes of kinds of products, etc.) 3. consciousness and way of thinking (selfishness, calculating way of thinking, etc.) 4. the forms of marriage and festivals (the widening of the range of marriage, economization of wedding ceremonies, etc.) 5. the road situation (a distinct improvement in the road situation, its benefits, etc.), and social intercourse with neighbors (a decrease in number of formal and informal parties etc.) 6. the population of the village (a marked decrease in population, flowing out of even the eldest sons into urban areas, etc.) 7. the percentage of higher school attendance and the substance of education (a rise in the percentage of senior high school attendance etc.) It is recognized that the ways of grasping "changes" vary characteristically according to age, sex and family circumstances of the interviewed inhabitants.
