(2) The initial portion of the stepped leader of a ground discharge must be cloud discharges producing very similar waveforms to the true α type stepped leader. (3) Some of the stepped leaders have no initial pulses, and the leader begins with a group of isolated pulses or with high frequency pulsations, which seems to mean that the leader begins without any leading cloud discharges described in paragraph(2).
