However, the people of the village of Mecerreyes in Castilla y León, Spain, do not see the mask costumes that appear in Carnival from the perspective of death and regeneration. This paper examines the best way to understand the mask costumes of Mecerreyes village by focusing on the background of words such as \"tradition\" and \"authentic,\" as spoken by the villagers. The carnival, that takes place before Lent, is said to preserves the historical traditions of the village of Mecerreyes. The mask costumes that appear on the day of the Carnival are also considered to be traditional, and the wearers act to scare the audience. The village people say that mask costumes are, \"an old thing in the village,\" in that they represent traditions, and every year several of these mask costumes are made and used by the villagers. When the 81 different kinds of mask costumes in the village were categorized into \"man\", \"animals\", \"artifact\", \"natural object\" and \"other\", most of the meanings of the costumes were related to agriculture or pastoralism. However, it has also become clear that many of them relate to things that were once common, but are not common in the modern Mecerreyes village. The changes in village life in terms of agriculture and pastoralism have also made it clear that the word \"tradition\" spoken by villagers mainly refers to the life of the village before 1970. In conclusion, the case of the village of Mecerreyes can be characterized as a visiting god in the previous studies because of its relevance to agriculture and factors of fear. 内容記述 Previous studies of European masks linked the masks exclusively to the themes of death and regeneration, and described them as representing a visiting god who announces the end of winter and the coming of spring. However, the people of the village of Mecerreyes in Castilla y León, Spain, do not see the mask costumes that appear in Carnival from the perspective of death and regeneration.
