However, from the 2000s, this Nordic country has experienced the influx of a large number of immigrants due to the strong economic growth and labor shortages. The increasing numbers of immigrants arrived to Iceland mainly from EEA countries. However, non-EEA countries citizens also soon became ‘visible’ in the host society, although migration policy was strict against the latter. In this way, immigrants from various countries brought some diversity to the society of Iceland. With the growing number of immigrants, the increasing number of scholars has become interested in immigration issues such as the impact of immigration policy on non-EEA migrants and the integration process, in which the usage of languages and transnational practices were given special attention. However, no much research on the structure of ethnic communities and immigrants’ interaction within the ethnic communities has so far been done. In this study, I focus on Chinese immigrants and analyze how they built and developed their ethnic community in Iceland. Even though this community has a thirty-year-long history, it has not attracted much attention, particularly due to the small number of Chinese in the country. I use ethnographic data to analyze the migration of Chinese to Iceland and their life practices in this country. Chinese ethnic organizations constitute the core of this community in Iceland, which has developed through the activities carried out by these organizations. The establishment of the Association of Chinese in Iceland and the cultural activities of this organization created a community space for Chinese immigrants, which allowed them to promote communication with each other and strengthen their unity. Besides, the establishment of the Icelandic Chinese Travel Association prevented competition between Chinese immigrants in the tourist business, which was initially caused by the dramatic increase in the number of Chinese tourists. This association elaborated various rules to overcome the disorder in the community, thereby ensuring the sustainability of its development.}, pages = {313--327}, title = {アイスランドにおける中国人移民のコミュニティの形成と発展}, volume = {4}, year = {2021} }
