In this paper, we analyze the meaning of the Japanese sentence-final element -te naranai 'unbearably...', based on the frequency of its appearance in a corpus. As a result, it is clear that on the one hand -te naranai typically co-occurs with the predicates kigasuru 'have a feeling that...', omoeru 'seem that...' or omowareru 'seem that…'， and on the other hand it partially overlaps with -te tamaranai and -te shikataganai (which also mean 'unbearably…'）. Furthermore, we analyze the distinction between corpus-based research and questionnaire-based research on the introspection of native speakers. As a result, it becomes clear that there are some expressions like atsukute naranai 'unbearably hot', which speakers judge as acceptable but which are in fact rarely used.
