 note = {In the sixth centrny Merovingian kings issued diplomas, which permitted the recipient to marry a woman without the consent of her parents. However, during the course of the seventh centrny, production of this type of diploma ceased. Contrary to the assumption that these diplomas vanished due to the influence of the Church on legal life, this paper argues that the issuance of "marriage diploma" reflects royal behaviour privileging middle and lower class people, and that the decline of these diplomas was partly due to a shift in royal administration, which itself could be related to the establishment of "Frankish nobility".},
