It is a gaze in which the tourist projects his or her image of the tourist site onto the land and sees the site in a way that conforms to that image. This gaze has been considered to be an influence from classical works or a product of the imagination of “I,” but the development of the tourism industry is also a background to the development of this gaze, and it is considered to be a gaze generated by such a system. In addition, when “I” visited Minase around 1930, tourism for the purpose of historical exploration was in vogue. In this sense, “I” can be said to have the characteristics of a tourist. “The man” also talks about Oyu in a way that matches the gaze of the “I.” “The man’s” narrative is based on the classical image of Oyu. By describing Oyu based on classical imagery, the “The man” adds to and amplifies these qualities, and while affirming Shinnosuke, he tries to confine Oyu within his own image. “I” and “The man” dye the subject with the preceding image and cast their gaze in accordance with their desire for it to be so. However, at the conclusion of the story, “The man” disappears. This disappearance reveals to “I” the delusional and romantic aspects of “The man’s” narrative. In addition, the disappearance of the landscape before “I” also relativizes “the tourist gaze” of “I”.
