Four issues regarding the development of communication skills for university students emerged: the widening gap in communication skills, lack of experience in practical learning, students with a negative view of communication, and students with mental health issues and those who have experienced such problems. The study suggests the following: (1) Learners have limited experience in practical learning. As some learners may have mental health issues, it is important to grasp their perceptions of practical learning. (2) However, excessive focus on only learners with mental health issues should be avoided in favor of making the program beneficial to all learners. (3) There should be greater focus on group formation, especially considering the rising population of students with past or continuing psychological problems. (4) Teachers should work as facilitators to properly guide students, and remember that differences in motivation and ability to learn may be widening. (5) As many students express uneasiness with interpersonal communication and public speaking, or their practical learning experiences, teachers should carefully motivate all students. (6) It is key to foster positive attitudes toward communication and practical learning among students, and to move on to more advanced contents and methods once students are sufficiently motivated. (7) “External knowledge,” through additional instruction, is necessary to supplement the lack of experience in practical learning.
