Among them, the types that are mainly represented by honorific forms such as "monoshitamawu" have decreased in number since the Muromachi Period and have almost declined since the Edo Period. Regarding the cause, in the previous theory, it is assumed that "monoshitamawu" was replaced by "watarasetamawu", which is often used in War chronicles. Moreover, it is also considered that in the Kamakura Period, "owasu / owashimasu", which has indicated the existence since the Heian Period, was often used. Therefore, this article aims to investigate the usage of these "monoshitamawu", "owasu / owashimasu", and "watarasetamawu" as expressions of existence. The result shows that "owasu / owashimasu" is used in a wide range of existence sentences including the first introductory sentence, while "monoshitamawu" and "watarasetamawu" are showing similar tendencies in usage distribution. However, it also shows that about 60% of "monoshitamawu" is seen in quantitative existence sentences, and about 80% of "watarasetamawu" is seen in spatial existence sentences. That is, the two expressions vary in the density of specific usage. We can suggest that these differences are due to the semantic nature of the individual verbs. Regarding the distribution of examples by style, "monoshitamawu" is neither found in War chronicles, nor in Muromachi-period texts and Christian materials, indicating a bias toward Medieval courtly fiction. In comparison, "watarasetamawu" is prominent in War chronicles. In other words, "monoshitamawu" being "replaces" by "watarasetamawu" can be considered as a historical development peculiar to War chronicles. Besides, the change in the meaning and usage of "monoshitamawu" is inseparable from its character as a proverb. There is still room to discuss the decrease of "monoshitamawu" in the usage of existence from other viewpoints. For instance, we can observe through the honorific form namely "monoshitamawu". We can also try to find out the link between it and the decline of the usage as a subsidiary verb.}, pages = {135--150}, title = {中世における存在を表す「ものしたまふ」 : 「おはす・おはします」「わたらせたまふ」と比較して}, volume = {6}, year = {2023} }
