Tte yuu ka is often used as a repair preface in self-repair to indicate that the repair solution is better than the trouble source without rejecting the latter (Hayashi, Hosoda, & Morimoto, 2019). To understanding check, responses such as confirmation or correction are relevant. Some linguistic tokens are used for confirmation to understanding check. For example, in Japanese, un and so are chosen depending on interactional achievements (Kushida, 2011). When the understanding check is incorrect, the recipient of the utterance corrects it. However, direct other-correction should be avoided (Schegloff, Jefferson, & Sacks, 1977), which is why turn design of other-correction is mitigated, such as with adding I think. In talk-in-interaction in Japanese, tte yuu ka is used to respond to understanding check as a mitigated other-correction. This paper describes and analyzes two different workings of this practice. The first one is as follows: tte yuu ka is used when there is too fine a line to determine with confidence whether the other party's understanding check is correct or incorrect, and thus, the speaker responds while indicating that they are not wrong about the understanding check although the speaker did not intend this initially. The second one is as follows: even when the other party's understanding check is incorrect, tte yuu ka is used to foreshadow an explanation with some complexity without directly correcting it. The results of the present analysis suggest the following two points. First, a diversity of interactions is addressed by differences in the construction of utterances in the portion containing the response portion to questions. While previous analytic stud ies of conversation have revealed various relationships between interactions and turn-initial lexical tokens at the beginning of utterances, this paper could be considered one attempt to do so. Second, regarding the diversity of ways people respond to understanding checks, some attention has been paid to the types of affirmative responses to understanding checks (Kushida, 2011); however, less attention has been paid to how responses other than affirmative ones are made. This paper serves as a starting point to shed more light on various aspects of responses to understanding checks.
