During the incremental exercise V02, VC02, VE, and heart rate were measured continuously. Grip strength (kg) and AMA (Bone-free upper arm muscle area, cm^2) were evaluated by the mean value or both upper extremities. The peak V02 values or SCI and AB were :33.9 ± 5.0 (mean ± SD) and 27.6 ± 5.4 ml/kg/min. respectively, which were significantly different. Some subjects were not able to exercise until attaining the 90% of the maximum heart rate estimated by their age ( = 220-age). They showed a tendency to have inferior grip strength. The significant correlation was observed between the peak VO2 and the grip strength of all subjects (r = 0.78). It was suggested that upper extremity exercise by arm-crank ergometer was limited by peripheral factors which originated from muscular fatigue and discomfort in advance of being limited by central circulatory factors.
