Educational Sciences}, month = {Mar}, note = {The purpose of this paper is to focus on the Pesantren Law (Undang-Undang Republik Indonesia Nomor 18 Tahun 2019 Tentang Pesantren) enacted in Indonesia on 16 October 2019 and to examine how the law was enacted and its specific contents. The content of this paper is summarized in the following five points. First, we examined the position of Pesantren in the Indonesian school education system. Second, the relationship between education- related laws and Pesantren law was discussed. Third, the background leading to the enactment of the Pesantren Law were discussed. Fourth, the specific contents of the Pesantren Law were discussed. Fifth, the significance of the enactment of the Pesantren Law was discussed. Finally, we explored the future direction of Islamic education reform. In our discussion, we analyzed relevant laws and regulations, data from the Ministry of Religious Affairs. In conclusion, we point out the following three points. First, the Law is the first law to regulate Pesantren, which is the institution with diverse functions such as education, mission, and social empowerment. Second, the Nation Awakening Party (Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa) lobbied for the enactment of the Pesantren Law. However, due to the involvement of other Islamic parties in the process of enactment, the final draft was significantly streamlined from the original bill. Third, the Pesantren Law was characterized by (1) the direction of Indonesian Islam, (2) inclusion of Pesantren education in the school education system, and (3) increased government support for Pesantren. Some have expressed concern about the law, fearing the loss of Pesantren traditions and political intervention to Pesantren.
