In this paper, we focus on “creative experiential learning activities” by organizing the purpose and contents of the activities, concentrating on the activity areas, and considering the changes caused by the revision of the curriculum. One of the characteristics of the Korean curriculum is that it prescribes in detail the contents, evaluation standards, methods, and goals for each subject. All primary and secondary schools, including private schools, must follow the curriculum. Creative experiential learning activities—the particular focus of this paper as a kind of inquirybased learning—are extracurricular activities introduced in 2009 in the revised curriculum and established for all grades. Four activity areas were set: “autonomous activities,” “club activities,” “volunteer activities,” and “career activities.” The curriculum includes goals and examples for each activity. Characteristics of creative experiential learning activities in Korea include detailed regulation of the curriculum and standardized activity areas. Besides activities related to problem solving, there are also a variety of experiential learning practices. The significance and characteristics of creative experiential learning activities can be referred to in relation to university entrance examination reform. The government is working on an entrance examination system that evaluates students’ learning activities other than academic achievements. To fairly utilize the variety of creative experiential learning activities as reference materials for entrance examinations, specifying the activity areas is required. However, in the new curriculum announced in 2022, the activity areas inherent in creative experiential learning activities and the common guidelines that schools and teachers must follow are reduced.
