It finds that the policy underlying Chinese ethnic minority education, the “pluralistic unitary structure theory” is characterized as including multiple identities of “ethnic Chinese” and “autonomous” ethnic groups. The policy of ethnic Chinese minority education inhibited the formation of an identity as ethnic Mongolians over an encouragement of assimilation. Previous studies have analyzed policy, curriculum, and educational materials, but have not clarified the qualitative aspects of research such as an analysis of the actual classes and how the students perceive them. In studies that investigate the actual situation of minority education, issues that had not been addressed by local students and teachers are clarified. Furthermore, even though ethnic minorities living in Chinese society are expected to identify as Chinese as well as their own ethnic identity, no analysis has been conducted on the assumption that they have multiple identities.
