He stayed in the United States with the help of a government scholarship from 1910 to 1917. At Columbia University, he wrote the doctoral dissertation “The Development of the Logical Method in Ancient China” under Professor John Dewey’s supervision. After returning to China, Hu Shih applied Dewey’s philosophy to his own research project, and emphasized it as a method. However, few studies have examined how Hu Shih applied it to educational reform in the May Fourth period. This paper aims to examine Hu Shih’s reception and application of Dewey’s philosophy as an intellectual basis of the new school system in 1922. For this purpose, the author analyses Hu Shih’s statements concerning with Dewey’s philosophy and his lecture titled “Experimentalism.” Before attending Columbia, Hu Shih encountered Dewey’s philosophy through the criticism of experimentalism at Cornell University, which was affected by neo-Hegelianism. According to Hu Shih’s autobiography, the influence of neo-Hegelianism here was from the genealogy of British thinker Thomas Hill Green. In that context, Hu Shih began to read Dewey’s books systematically. Thus, Hu Shih came to neglect the early Dewey, who was under the influence of neo-Hegelianism. Furthermore, considering Hu Shih’s lecture just before Dewey’s visit to China, all the descriptions presented on Dewey were subsequent to his career in Chicago, and ”Democracy and Education” was regarded as the representative work of his philosophy of education. Based on such a philosophical method, Hu Shih conducted his own research projects, and was deeply involved in the establishment of the new school system in 1922. The analysis of this paper reveals two important facts about Hu Shih’s reception and application of Dewey’s philosophy for educational policy formation: 1)Hu Shih conveyed Dewey’s philosophy to China with his friends, who also studied pragmatism at Columbia University. He came to greatly emphasize Dewey’s philosophy as a method, especially because of the ideological opposition and arguments with Marxist theory. 2) Hu Shih was a core policymaker for establishing the new school system in 1922 with the background of Dewey’s philosophy. He applied it to educational policy formation as a social reconstruction, and Dewey recognized these new systems as a great step forward in education for new China.}, pages = {135--145}, title = {胡適によるジョン・デューイ思想の受容と展開 : 「実験主義の信徒」として}, volume = {69}, year = {2023} }
