Subjects consisted of workers assigned to different jobs in nursery schools (n=376), after-school institutions (n=184), and social welfare service facilities (n=1299). Workers doing manual material handling (MMH) in a distribution industry (n=786) and students in a junior college (n=444) were included and compared with the social welfare service workers. A special survey questionnaire was drawn up for the purpose. Among female workers, asymmetrical lifting was the most frequent subject o f complaint in nurses, workers for the aged or miscellaneous services, who had a high prevalence of low back pain episodes. Among males, the complaint rate was highest in workers with MMH in a distribution industry. The complaint rate of asymmetrical lifting was higher in many social welfare service workers than in clerical workers or students. Complaint rates of low back pain during or after asymmetrical lifting were largely different among the occupations. In nursery school teachers, many tasks involving asymmetrical lifting were found. By logistic multiple regression model, the length of employment was suspected to encourage workers to avoid asymmetrical lifting, while time-limit urgency and leg muscle power were seen as facilitating factors.
