Three skiers, two highly skilled (Subject A and C) and one intermediate (Subject B) performed successive parallel turns to the right and left along arcs of 9m down a smoothed experimental slope of 13.5 degrees. Subject A and B used skis of 180cm while Subject C performed with three different skis, 85, 160 and 200cm in length. Eleven points 30 degrees apart along the two arcs were selected for analysis. Single photographs were taken simultaneously by two 35mm still cameras positioned at 90 degrees with one directed perpendicular to the skier\u0027s path at these points. The results revealed two fundamental movements of the center of gravity (C.G.) of skiers. The first was movement into the turn to counteract the centripetal force and second was forward- backward motion to create downhill and uphill rotations of the skis. During the first half of th first turn the skier\u0027s C.G. displaced inward and forward while during the second half it was displaced inward and backward. However, the C.G. was displaced inward and forward throughtout the second turn. Movement of the C.G. backward reduced the speed of the skier as observed during the first turn. By maintaining the C.G. more forward as observed during the second turn the speed was increased. As a consequence, the skiers produced a wider path and lower velocity during the first turn while the intermediate skier (Subject B) demonstrate a wider path than the highly skilled skier (Subject A). Analysis of the trials by Subject C using different length skis indicate that the C.G. was displaced progressively more forward as the length of ski decreased, and thereby controlled excessive skidding and increased the force created by the edges of the skis against the snow. Three skiers, two highly skilled (Subject A and C) and one intermediate (Subject B) performed successive parallel turns to the right and left along arcs of 9m down a smoothed experimental slope of 13.5 degrees.
