The issue of long working hours required in the teaching profession has garnered significant academic and social attention, which may have influenced university students’ inclination towards pursuing the profession. Previous surveys on this subject are found to have the following limitations: (i) few comprehensive studies encompassing multiple universities and faculties, including those that are not normal universities; (ii) the exclusion of students who dropped out of teacher training programs; and (iii) an insufficient exploration of the relationship between long working hours and an inclination towards a teaching career. To address these gaps, our research group conducted a web survey (“Survey on University Students’ Inclination Towards Teaching Careers”) targeting third- and fourth-year university students currently enrolled in a teaching program, those who have completed one, or those who have dropped out of a teacher training program. This paper describes the survey design and summarizes the findings. The survey reveals that one-fourth of participants had already dropped out of the teacher training program, with approximately 60% of them citing reasons of the long working hours in teaching as well as a lack of confidence in handling interactions with parents. Moreover, among all survey participants, those who did not expect work style reforms to alleviate the problem of long working hours or who did not believe they could avoid or endure such conditions were more likely to avoid teaching careers altogether. These findings suggest the necessity of improving current teaching conditions to address the severe teacher shortage. They also highlight the importance of providing concrete evidence to students in teacher training programs regarding how long working hours might be mitigated in the future. |
