In Japan, there is a serious shortage of teachers. This research investigates the reasons why women are no longer choosing to become teachers, as well as the attitudes of university students who aspire to become teachers. In teacher research, the background of aspiring teachers has been explained greatly in terms of experiences in school life and encounters with teachers. The gap between the motivation of elementary, junior high, and high school students and the current image of teacher acquired at university is thought to be the reason for the decline in motivation to become an educator. Differences were found between men and women teachers in their perceptions of their working environment, one which is directly related to the issue of balancing work and personal or family life. For women going through university to become teachers, issues related to childbirth and childcare become problematic with teaching careers. This research focuses on attitudes towards one’s future working environment as well as the image students have for what makes a dedicated teacher, and how these impacts one’s career choices. The data used in this research is from a web-based survey conducted through Macromill, Inc. and targeted at third- and fourth-year university students who are taking or have previously taken one or more courses required for teacher certification. First, we identified changes in teaching aspirations and attitudes toward the teacher employment examination. For women, the tendency to abandon teaching became more pronounced as the time to start work drew closer. Women were less likely to consider taking the teacher employment exam. However, when they did consider taking the exam, women were more strongly motivated to become teachers. Second, we focused on the attitudes of the group who were willing to take the teacher employment examination and who had high aspirations. Women were aware of the current situation of long working hours and tended to think that they should not sacrifice their private life more than what men should do. Nevertheless, as reasons for women considering taking the teacher employment examination, the expected improvement in long working hours and the ability to find fulfillment via their students were viable reasons for becoming a teacher. In summary, it is important to resolve issues in the working environment for teachers, such as long working hours and working styles, so that more women to consider taking the teacher employment examination. Furthermore, in addition to improving the working environment, time must be made to encourage quality teacher-student interaction. |
