内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 This research examines the motivation behind parents’ participation in their children’s extracurricular activities following the transition of extracurricular activities from school clubs to the greater community. A look at the types of children’s current activities as well as factors other than SES adds clarification to this issue. We also discuss the rationale of parents keenly aware of the burden of involvement yet who nevertheless feel motivated to participate in these extracurricular activities. Previous studies have portrayed parents’ perceptions of this transition of club activities as one that facilitates the perpetuation of children’s extracurricular activities, as well as one dictated by inevitable social or economic aspects. However, two issues remain: First, a current, comprehensive activity status of children has not been considered in lieu of a myopic focus on the parents’ views of this transition of extracurricular activities from school to the community. Second, previous studies that focus on how community transition implies a beneficiary burden have not adequately considered the social and economic impact that transition incurs. Additionally, studies that have focused on regional transition have been limited to examining the relationship between SES and parental views on transition and its beneficiary burden yet have not explored existing factors necessary for the perpetuation of extracurricular activities; nor have they addressed issues that include community reactions to the inclusion of newcomers to a community. To address these issues, this study conducted a secondary analysis of a survey (a web-based survey using Google Form) conducted by the Board of Education of Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture, titled “Questionnaire Survey on Junior High School Club Activities (Extracurricular) and Local Club Extracurricular Activities on Holidays (Saturdays, Sundays, and National Holidays). The resulting findings are twofold. First, the factors that influence the willingness to engage in activities differ significantly among parents depending on the parents’ individual circumstances. Secondly, these results were also obtained even when controlling for the number of books in the home, an SES item, as found in previous studies. One finding this paper offers for future discussion is that parents had different perceptions of regional transition; these differences are connected to their children’s current activities. While this finding may seem at first to be obvious, previous studies have elicited little evidence of the detailed varieties of parental presence regarding discussions of regional transition.
