This study clarifies the actual conditions of part-time job experience for university student preservice teachers using data from a web survey conducted on university students across Japan who are (or have been) taking a teaching course. First, we confirmed the characteristics of part-time jobs in which the university student pre-service teachers are engaged. Compared to general university students, the percentage of those engaged in educational part-time jobs tends to be significantly higher among pre-service teaching students. This reflects the high rate of engagement among students who hope to work in elementary, junior high, or high schools. Second, changes in skills and attitudes related to career development as experienced through parttime jobs were examined for each of the three main job types: education, food service, and hospitality. While improvements in all skills and consciousness were observed in most cases, the details of these improvements differed by job type. Third, we suggested the possibility that the choice of part-time job type as defined by the amount of cultural capital possessed by the individual student. In recent years, discussions regarding career development for university students has focused on the positive impact of the part-time job experience. This being said, it is always necessary to pay attention to structural issues that might lead to social disparities. |
