| 内容記述 | This paper examines the concept of time travel in Philippa Pearce’s Tom’s Midnight Garden from the perspective of dream time and explores the psychological transformation of Mrs Bartholomew’s loneliness. Time travel in this novel is based on Mrs Bartholomew’s dreams, and this approach creates a unique temporal structure. Therefore, understanding how dreams relate to time is essential for interpreting the characters’ psychological states. Previous studies have focused on the non-physical and psychological aspects of the time that Tom experiences, often incorporating the role of dreams. Lesley Aers (1970) highlights Tom’s journey through non-linear time and the importance of “dream time”. Neil Philip (1982) discusses dreams as tools to explore psychological and temporal dimensions. Raymond E. Jones (1985) argues that time in the novel is a “continuing imaginary reality”, and Maria Nikolajeva (2009) examines the interplay between physical time (chronos) and psychological time (kairos). However, little research has examined how Tom’s adventures, mediated by dreams, alter Mrs Bartholomew’s emotional state from the perspective of dream time. Therefore, this paper aims to focus on the dream-based temporal structure in the novel and shed light on Mrs Bartholomew’s inner world. The analysis will concentrate on the five-dimensional nature of time in the garden, drawing on J.W. Dunne’s theory of Serialism, to highlight Mrs Bartholomew’s present-day loneliness and her psychological release from it. It will also demonstrate that Tom’s intervention in multi-layered time alleviates her loneliness without altering Mrs Bartholomew’s real past. In doing so, this paper elucidates that the novel can be read as a story about the psychological transformation and release from the loneliness of a lonely elderly woman. | |||||||||
