| 内容記述 | The purpose of this study is to examine the benefits and costs associated with gay men being in the closet, and how these factors influence their decision to come out or remain closeted. Previous research has demonstrated that people often lie in their daily lives for various reasons, including from both selfish and altruistic motives. Additionally, lying has associated costs, such as loss of trust when the deception is uncovered, feelings of guilt, and anxiety about potential exposure. In a predominantly heteronormative society, gay men are frequently assumed to be heterosexual unless they disclose their sexual orientation. Consequently, they are often in a position where they must keep their sexual orientation private. Because the closet is invisible to others, unless gay men explicitly state their sexual orientation, they are inevitably placed in a situation where they are, whether intentionally or not, “deceiving” others. Moreover, if gay men adopt heterosexual behavior to maintain the closet for some reason, they might experience psychological states akin to those involved in deception. To explore these dynamics, the researcher conducted interviews with 16 gay men, born and raised in Japan, who have all at one point experienced coming out of the closet. The study employed a constructivist grounded theory approach to analyze the data and compared the findings to discussions of deception. The results indicated that participants often chose to remain in the closet when they believed it would benefit themselves and others. Conversely, they opted to come out when staying in the closet led to feelings of guilt or discomfort associated with being perceived as heterosexual. Thus, the decision to come out was generally based on a consideration of the relative benefits and costs. Future research will need to examine the extent to which such benefits and costs influence the decision to come out, as well as why gay men may feel guilty about keeping their sexuality secret. | |||||||||
