| 内容記述 | Manetho, an Egyptian priest believed to have served under the Early Ptolemaic Dynasty, wrote Aegyptiaca, which marked the first attempt to depict a comprehensive dynastic history of Egypt through historical narrative. Aegyptiaca survives only in fragments preserved in later references and citations by Jewish and Christian authors. The original text is lost, and the information these fragments provide often does not correspond to the Egyptian history reconstructed archaeologically. Nonetheless, Aegyptiaca remains a crucial source for understanding how Manetho, in his unique position as a local priest serving under the Early Ptolemaic Dynasty, perceived and articulated Egyptian dynastic history. By translating descriptions related to the Early Dynasties, which have not received sufficient studies, this paper tries to explore how Manetho interpreted the establishment of Egyptian dynasties. Based on this examination, we reconsider why Manetho wrote Aegyptiaca. The following can be said from fragments related to the early dynasties. First, Manetho likely perceived Egyptian history as characterized by a certain pattern of repetition. In addition, as exemplified by the descriptions of the first two kings of the Second Dynasty, the annotations attached to each king were inserted in a way that had some relationship and could function as lessons for the newly arrived Greek elites of the Ptolemaic period. However, these points do not imply that Manetho freely altered the history of Egypt. As indicated by the descriptions of Menes, Manetho did not seem to present Egyptian history as particularly glorious. This suggests that he aimed to reconstruct the history of Egyptian dynasties in a manner faithful to the sources he used. Nevertheless, it is certain that Manetho reinterpreted these sources to match the circumstances of the Ptolemaic period. In particular, the story that a woman received the honor of kingship during the reign of Binothris of the Second Dynasty implies a deep connection with the policies under the reign of Ptolemy II. Based on the analyses, it can be concluded that Manetho's Aegyptiaca had a highly multifaceted purpose. The creation of Aegyptiaca essentially involved compiling the temple records into a dynastic history, following the traditional Egyptian format of king lists. However, by adding narratives, Aegyptiaca became a more practical and instructive work for the Greek ruling class. Furthermore, Manetho attempted to historicize and legitimize the innovative policies under the reign of Ptolemy II by incorporating them into the history of past dynasties. | |||||||||||||
