| 内容記述 | This paper examines the literary representation of the “Wanbaoshan Incident” through Lee Tae-jun's "Nong Gun (The Farmer)" and its two Japanese translations by Shin Geon and Jeong In-taek. The Wanbaoshan Incident, which occurred in July 1931, involved a conflict between Chosŏn and Chinese farmers over rice paddy reclamation near Changchun, Manchuria, escalating into a significant diplomatic issue. "Nong Gun (The Farmer)" reinterprets this event by emphasizing the struggles faced by Korean immigrants and highlighting the hardships of Chosŏn farmers oppressed in the conflict. The two Japanese translations offer different representations of Chosŏn immigrants in Manchuria to Japanese readers, influenced by the translation process. This study analyzes the original Korean text and its Japanese translations, elucidating how each version reflects different facets of the ethnic conflict shaped by the translators' approaches. Additionally, it assesses the reception of the work within Korean and Japanese literary circles, underscoring the complex cultural dynamics between the colony and the empire. The findings indicate that the Wanbaoshan Incident serves as a central motif in the literary text, accentuating the adversities faced by Chosŏn migrants in Manchuria and fostering a discourse opposing the colonizing policies of imperial Japan. Shin's liberal translation strategy intensifies the depiction of conflicts between Chosŏn and Chinese farmers and the oppression of Chosŏn farmers, reflecting a nationalist perspective on the plight of Chosŏn in Manchuria. In contrast, Jeong's translation maintains the original tone, influenced by his close relationship with the author and the publisher's work process. These two translations reveal dual aspects of cultural connections between Japan and Chosŏn at the time: one facilitated by central literary figures and another through general intellectual exchanges at the periphery of the literary world. This research contributes to understanding how translation affects the reception and interpretation of literary works across different political and cultural contexts, shedding light on the intricate dynamics between colonial Chosŏn and imperial Japan. | |||||||||
