| 内容記述 | This paper investigates the changes in a locally rooted festival event after it was placed in a macro and global context by being designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan and registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. It also considers how these changes can be interpreted. To this end, this paper examines the transformations of the ‘Ogaki Festival’ from the 2000s to the 2010s, showing that the changes in the Ogaki Festival during that period can be summarized in two aspects: employing the Ogaki Festival as a tourist resource and preserving the festival ’s ‘original’ cultural and religious significance. The analysis of changes to the parade route and the Ogaki Festival procession suggests that these modifications were aimed at reconstructing the festival not merely as an event, but as traditional culture unique to Ogaki’s history. The cases discussed in this paper demonstrate that the meaning and significance of festivals are never fixed; rather, they are continuously reproduced internally through interactions between hosts and various guests, including tourists. This ongoing reproduction allows festivals, as intangible folk cultural properties, to persist in a lively form. Moreover, the fact that this reproduction of meaning in the Ogaki Festiva l was concentrated around the time of its designation as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and registration as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, is highly suggestive. Furthermore, our interview survey revealed that not only experts and government agencies but the festival bearers have actively participated in the process of change, reconstructing the meaning of the festival and trying to pass it on to the next generation as ‘our pride’. To that extent, I believe that this study has been able to provide a glimpse into the direction that festivals, and Intangible Folk Cultural Properties in general should take in the future. | |||||||||
