内容記述 This article examines the post-war experiences of the Japanese who resided in colonial Korea during the Japanese Empire period but returned to Japan after the Second World War. It focuses on two persons, Hiroshi SHIKATA and his son Shin SHIKATA. They provide a rare case in the sense that while both of them tried to overcome the legacy of Japanese colonialism through their works in academia and juvenile literature, they still have been criticized from the viewpoint of colonial modernity. In this article, I review their writings and discuss how far their decolonization efforts succeeded. Hiroshi, for his part, helped improve Japanese-Korean relations as one of the founders of a friendship organization. Meanwhile, Shin wrote many juvenile novels dealing with the Japanese characters who struggled alongside Koreans, Chinese, and others to end the Japanese occupation. I argue that they could contribute to decolonization to a certain extent, despite severe criticism by later scholars, but that their works are still limited by the fact that they contained some expressions which went against their intention of decolonization. I find more potential in Shin’s essay, which vividly describes his own experience during the colonial period, than in his fictional works.
