| 内容記述 | This study aims to introduce watermarks and trend in seventeenth century books published in London, particularly focusing on the Hobbes Collection. Paper produced in Europe was often watermarked until the eighteenth century. The paper industry developed more slowly in the UK than in Europe, therefore, paper was imported from Europe. The study examined the watermarks in the first edition of Leviathan, particularly the Head edition that used many ‘Post or Pillar’ and ‘Pot’ papers, which matches these characteristics. To determine whether these characteristics apply to other editions, the watermarks of rare Western books in the collection were examined. The survey included the Hobbes Collections, published by Andrew Crooke and his successor William Crooke, as well as the folio editions. The results revealed two aspects: 1) ‘Coat of Arms’ were found relatively frequently in the editions published by Crooke et al.; 2) this feature differed from the paper used in the main body of the first Head edition of Leviathan, more closely resembling the paper trends observed in other folio editions. | |||||||||
