| 内容記述 | Many studies have explored the concept and nature of ‘empire.’ However, as Frederick Cooper notes in Colonialism in Question (Columbia UP, 2005), significant gaps remain in the study of ‘empire’ and ‘imperialism.’ Some periods and issues have received little attention, and while maritime empires, such as the British Empire, have been extensively studied, continental empires have been relatively neglected. By including an analysis of continental empires, we can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the structure and dynamics of empire. Additionally, by comparing the immigration policies of maritime and continental empires, and examining the roles of different actors in those policies, we can develop a deeper understanding of the formation and evolution of empires. This paper compares the immigration policies of a maritime empire (the British Empire) and a continental empire (the Russian Empire) in Northeast Asia. Drawing on archival sources and other materials from the nineteenth century, it investigates colonization debates, immigration policy decision-making by British and Russian imperial authorities, the roles and interactions of key actors within the imperial systems, and the management of human resources in both empires. The study also highlights the characteristics of overseas migration from Northeast Asia, particularly focusing on emigration from China. | |||||||||
