| 内容記述 | The importance of Zen Buddhism in the history of Japanese portraiture has tended to focus on the self-congratulatory portraits of Zen monks. However, portraits of the founders of each sect were required to have inscriptions by Zen monks that conveyed a different teaching from those that had been used up until then. In other words, inscriptions on portraits in ancient Japan generally taught that the spread and development of the founder's teachings was as natural as the spread of light or fragrance. In contrast, medieval Japanese Zen monks taught through inscriptions on the statues of their founders that the “lack,” “corruption,” and “doubt” of those who respected the founder are the very elements that make individuals independent from society. In general, Zen documents are strongly aware of the gap between the value of the individual and the evaluation of society, and it is expected that research on Zen documents will progress in the future as historical materials that allow us to think about what the individual is in history. | |||||||
