A single specimen (86.9 mm standard length) of Halicmetus niger Ho et al. 2008 (Ogcocephalidae) was collected from the Kumanonada Sea using the HOV Shinkai 6500 during a cruise of R/V Yokosuka in 2024. This species has been recorded from eastern Australia, the south Java Sea, Taiwan, and Japanese waters (the Sagaminada Sea, off the Izu Islands, Tosa Bay, off Nagasaki, Takuyo-Daini Seamount, and the Okinawa Trough). The present specimen represents the first record of H. niger from the Kumanonada Sea, and it is the first report of capturing this species alive. In this study, we provide morphological information based on exceptionally well-preserved specimens and describe the habitat of this species. Moreover, we performed DNA metabarcoding of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I region for the gut contents of the specimen to analyze its diet. As a result, the specimen likely feeds on benthic invertebrates, such as crustaceans and annelids, inhabiting the study area, suggesting that the species functions as an intermediate or higher predator in deep-sea benthic ecosystems. |
