| 内容記述 | This paper explores the musical heroization of fallen soldiers in Britain during the First World War. It focuses on works composed by three renowned British composers: Gustave Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Edward Elgar. The commemoration of fallen soldiers in Britain became a national event after the armistice took effect in 1918, taking on ritualistic comparable to pilgrimages to sacred sites for martyrs. This commemorative culture influenced wartime expression in literature and the arts, in which soldiers were represented not merely as symbols of courage but as sacralized heroes of tragedy. It is likely that this new mode of heroization also emerged in musical works. To examine musical representations of fallen soldiers, this paper centers on Elgar’s largescale choral works The Spirit of England. The composition consists of three movements--The Fourth of August, To Women, and For the Fallen--composed in 1917, 1916, and 1915 respectively. To situate Elgar’s work within a broader commemorative tradition, two earlier choral settings of Walter Whitman’s poem, Dirge for Two Veterans, composed by Vaughan Williams in 1911 and by Holst in 1914, are also examined. These works share characteristic features of commemorative music, such as a funeral-march style using drums and brass instruments evocative of military bands--elements that are likewise present in The Spirit of England. However, Elgar’s work differs from those of Vaughan Williams and Holst in its pronounced foregrounding of sacralization and heroization. From both compositional analysis and reception history--particularly contemporary critical commentary--it becomes clear that fallen soldiers were praised as sacrificial heroes, ultimately transformed into the embodiment of the “Spirit of England” itself. | |||||||||
