| 内容記述 | Zhang Leping (1910-1992), the renowned cartoonist, centered much of his work on orphans, particularly the character Sanmao (Three Hairs). His Sanmao series spanned over fifty years, during which the character underwent significant transformation. Initially depicted in 1935 as a mischievous boy from a bourgeois family in Shanghai, Sanmao embodied simplicity and innocence. From 1937 to 1945, Zhang paused his work on Sanmao to engage in the anti- Japanese political movement, painting only a few Sanmao images related to the war. He returned to the theme in 1946 and 1947 with two comic strips: Sanmao Joins the Army and An Orphan (Sanmao) on the Streets. By this time, Sanmao had evolved into a country boy who becomes a homeless orphan in Shanghai. In 1949, An Orphan (Sanmao) on the Streets was adapted into a film with two endings: one returning Sanmao to the streets, and the other showing him celebrating the liberation of Shanghai and the nation. These endings suggest an ambiguous fate for Sanmao in the new China. By examining the transformations of this cartoon figure across different periods, this talk argues that the distortions in the depiction of the orphan Sanmao reflect various conflicting or incommensurate ideological, social, or representational demands placed upon him. More importantly, this grotesque child figure is multiple, not singular; low, not high. “Multiple” signifies that Sanmao has continually renewed itself since the 1930s, engaging with various political and social discourses over time. Thus, the cartoon figure can be seen as a process of becoming rather than a fixed identity. This multiplicity and instability are inscribed on his body as caricature, which burlesques and “grotesques” the ideals often associated with the idealized child-as-nation. This also encourages us to rethink the complexity between child, bodies and war propaganda in the first half of the twentieth century. | |||||||||||
