| 内容記述 | This paper attempts to reread Lee Hyo-seok’s Japanese-language novel Elegant Light based on Japanese-language sources. Lee Hyo-seok is one of the leading writers of modern Korean literature and was active in the Korean literary world in the 1930s. He also wrote in Japanese during the late colonial period. Research on Lee Hyo-seok is actively conducted in Korea. However, most previous studies have been based on Korean-language sources, with little reference to Japanese-language sources. Therefore, this paper first reconsiders Lee Hyoseok’s chronology from the late 1930s onward based on new sources. Despite the publication of several complete works, misinformation about Lee Hyo-seok’s life continues to circulate. To correct this information, this paper examines Lee Hyo-seok’s essays written in Japanese and related newspaper papers. Based on new sources related to the creative process, it then summarizes the events and characteristics that inspired The Elegant Light. Finally, it analyzes the changes in the protagonist’s relationships with those around him and attempts to compare Elegant Light with works that influenced him. This paper reexamines Elegant Light by focusing on its creative background and the relationships between the protagonist and those around him. When interpreting Elegant Light as a story about a young Korean man who rescues an ancient Goguryeo sword from Japanese hands, it is possible to find an expression of nationalism. However, a closer reading of the text reveals that Hyeon-yu’s love of antiques was not understood by his parents and friends, who are also Koreans, and that it was his father who handed the sword over to Hori. In other words, in addition to the Japanese, his family and other Koreans stood in his way as enemies. This setting avoids the binary opposition between Japanese and Koreans. The protagonist’s poetic excitement upon recovering the sword comes from being freed from all pain. His lack of interest in anything other than the Goguryeo sword indicates that he was not aiming to protect cultural property. By portraying his actions as the excitement of a lonely Korean youth, the nationalistic overtones are weakened. | |||||||||
