| 内容記述 | On the eve of the Chinese Civil War, The Border Region Music and Dance Festival, choreographed by Dai Ailian (1916-2006), was staged in Chongqing under the Kuomintang regime in March 1946, and again in Shanghai in August, one year after the Japanese withdrawal. Widely publicized through newspapers and magazines, the performances attracted significant public attention. This was due not only to Dai and her collaborators’ artistic talents in re-creating minority dances as stage art, but also to the festival’s entanglement with the ethnic policies and propaganda strategies of both the Nationalists and the Communists. This study, drawing on oral accounts from Dai and her contemporaries, as well as contemporary newspaper articles and critical writings, examines the festival from multiple perspectives while tracing the networks of those involved. First, by focusing on Dai’s diasporic experience as an overseas Chinese, it shows how her creative process simultaneously engaged in self-Orientalist expression while seeking new directions for Chinese dance. Second, through an analysis of the choreography of the festival’s works, it clarifies how Dai elevated folk dances into performative art. This was both an instance of “the invention of tradition” (Hobsbawm) and an attempt to reposition ethnic minority dance from the “periphery” to the “center,” sowing the seeds for the development of ethnic dance in the early years of the PRC. Finally, the festival’s reception as both “people’s art” and “ethnic dance” reflected the contrasting ethnic policies and propaganda aims of the two parties. Through this experience, Dai not only emerged as a leading figure in the state’s dance enterprise after 1949, but also cultivated a form of celebrity that warrants further attention. By situating the festival at the intersection of dance history, ethnic policy, and cultural memory in modern China, this study reassesses its significance within the broader trajectory of twentieth-century Chinese dance. | |||||||||
