| 内容記述 | This paper examines the reception of women’s theatre in modern East Asia through a comparative study of the Takarazuka Revue’s Parisette (1930) in Japan and the Yue Opera Liang Zhu Aishi (1939-1945) in China. Both were women-only performance groups, and each played a central role in shaping gender representation during its formative period. Parisette reflected Japan’s fascination with Western urban culture, presenting a glamorous stage world that inspired numerous audience submissions praising its exotic imagery and the appeal of the Otokoyaku (women playing male roles). By contrast, Liang Zhu Aishi reinterpreted the well-known traditional love story into a lyrical tragedy that criticized arranged marriage. Reviews and audience writings in newspapers and journals emphasized the play’s ethical and social dimensions, linking the performance to wider debates on family, morality, and women’s subjectivity. This study draws primarily on contemporaneous audience submissions and theatre reviews. Kageki magazine provided an official platform where Takarazuka’s largely female audience could voice admiration and critique, thereby integrating women’s perspectives into the cultural record. In contrast, Yue Opera relied on popular newspapers in which critical discourse was dominated by male intellectuals, even though women formed the core of its spectatorship and support. These contrasting contexts reveal that the cultural significance of women’s theatre was shaped not only by stage performance but also by the discursive channels through which audience voices were mediated and preserved. Placing Parisette and Liang Zhu Aishi in dialogue highlights both the shared potential of women-only theatre to destabilize established gender norms and the divergent trajectories that such theatre took in Japan and China. The comparison demonstrates how women’s theatre operated as a cultural arena where gender, audience culture, and social imagination intersected, while also underscoring that its broader impact was conditioned by the surrounding media environment and the structures of public discourse. | |||||||||
