| 内容記述 | William M. Johnston is a renowned American historian. He indicates that since the 1980s, numerous national anniversary ceremonies have been held mainly in Europe and the United States, attracting increasing academic attention. Johnston further notes that such ceremonies have been held frequently in countries such as France, Germany, and Italy, where multiple regime changes have occurred during the modern era. This is because these nations felt the need to publicly clarify which political and cultural assets from past regimes should be selected and inherited. Such phenomena are evident in Japan as well. National anniversary ceremonies attended by the Emperor were held 14 times before World War II, 93 times in the post-war Showa period, and 156 times in the Heisei period, with a particularly large number of ceremonies held after the War. This is because the political and social frameworks in Japan have changed multiple times, from the feudal system to the Meiji government, and then from the Constitution of the Empire of Japan to the democratic political system under the Constitution of Japan. Consequently, various social systems and institutions have also changed multiple times. One of the purposes of such anniversary ceremonies is to publicly demonstrate those systems or organizations from the past that will be retained, to establish its own unity. Attending such ceremonies also became one of the roles of the Emperor in the modern era. This study focuses on the 1921 ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the railway. It was the first such anniversary ceremony to be hosted by a government agency and attended by Crown Prince Hirohito, the Emperor’s representative. This study posits that such ceremonies impacted the identity of the national railway and the image of the new Emperor. | |||||||||
