| 内容記述 | In 1968, a protest emerged after Nikkatsu abruptly terminated director Seijun Suzuki’s contract and refused to lend his films for retrospective screening organized by the Ciné-club Research Society in Tokyo. This led to the formation of the Suzuki Seijun Incident Joint Struggle Committee, which supported Suzuki’s legal battle against Nikkatsu and sought to overturn the ban on his films. The incident is well known within the Japanese film world and emblematic of the 1968 global age of rebellion. However, it has received little scholarly attention, and few studies have examined the contemporaneous boom in cine clubs and so-called independent screening activities. This study reexamines the committee’s activities from the perspective of independent film-screening history. The Suzuki Seijun Incident stemmed from a clash between Japan’s traditional film industry, which controlled production, distribution, and exhibition, and the emerging network of cine clubs. While discussions within the Suzuki Seijun Incident Joint Struggle Committee were dominated by political ideology, some members sought to conceptualize an audience movement grounded in the film-viewing experiences that cine-clubs promoted. The analysis also considers the ideas for a film audience movement that filmmaker Matsumoto Toshio, who was involved in the committee, was developing at the time. It further examines how members of the Ciné-club Research Society, including Kawakita Kazuko, who provided key organizational support, evolved through their protest against Nikkatsu’s blockade of Suzuki’s films. By analyzing the discourse surrounding the committee, this study explores independent screening activities as both resistance against film bans and an assertion of the right to watch films, highlighting their broader implications. | |||||||||
