| 内容記述 | In this paper, I focus on the narrative techniques of Kuroi Senji’s Hashiru Kazoku (The Running Family), published in 1970, and examine its contemporaneous concern with the loss of the “father.” This novel reflects the anxieties of the “Introverted Generation” during Japan’s rapid economic growth. Kuroi often articulated a sense of the “emptiness of self ”, questioning the “innately existing self ” presupposed by earlier postwar writers. His experience in corporate labor exposed the limits of defining the self purely from within, prompting a search for self-realization through “objective axes outside the self.” The story adopts an “abstract and difficult style,” in which the familiar “family” takes on the “aspect of a mysterious living organism that alienates the self.” The key point is the deliberate focus on exclusion, where access to the characters’ inner thoughts is intentionally blocked. For instance, early scenes present dialogue without identifying speakers, causing individual voices to dissolve into an “anonymous collective.” Central to the work is the father, Yoshiyuki. The narrative avoids entering his mind, portraying him as an enigmatic “negative image.” Once a figure of authority, he now appears as a “small, frail old man” whose words lack conviction, symbolizing the erosion of patriarchal power in postwar Japan. This marks a generational shift in the father figure--from a “bearer of the state” to a diminished presence--reflecting the “new postwar everyday life.” The protagonist, Tokihiko, feels an inescapable gravitational pull from the family, a source of deep anxiety tied to lineage and blood ties. Even as he longs to escape to “nowhere,” he acknowledges he would “immediately return to the original place,” underscoring both the family’s pervasive influence and the persistence of his “self-emptiness.” Hashiru Kazoku ultimately critiques contemporary society by depicting an individual trapped within an unsettling family in the flattened landscape of postwar life--like passengers adrift in a car whose map and compass no longer function. | |||||||||
