内容記述 The aim of this study is to evaluate available research regarding the notion of “one terminal per student” and to further explore the possibilities for media theory in educational settings, utilizing the ICT (information and communication technology) terminals used by students. In educational settings in Japanese schools there is an increasing number of students who possess their own ICT terminals. As this occurs, it means that the “media” that intervenes in communication with teachers is continually changing. This begs the question as to what significance the transformation of “media” has in educational settings, and how educational research should approach this transformation. This paper provides an overview of research on the “one-to-one device” ICT terminals used by students. By doing so, it adopts the perspective that treats “media” as “communication media” or “material”. Previous research suggests how to identify the effects of a “one-to-one device,” and defines a focus on the teachers and students involved in the facilitation of its use. However, these studies consis tently show a media perspective common in traditional pedagogy; one which views the “one-to-one device” as a tool for providing information. Here, we suggest an idea that treats “media” as both “communication media” and “material,”, a perspective from which future learning methods may offer greater potential. By integrally applying new media theories, the question of “how methods (media) are transforming and redefining content (education)” leads to a better empirical understanding of the impact of the modern transformation of “media” by the advent of ICT in the field of education. In summary, while previous research limits its discussion to media as a “tool”, this research discusses media as an “element,” an integral part of the current educational scenario, thus, adds to the current dynamism currently witnessed in the field of media theory as related to education.
