内容記述 In recent years, the Japanese curriculum for compulsory school moral education has experienced significant changes with the introduction of “special subject: moral classes” that emphasize critical thinking and discussion. These developments have sparked debates regarding whether moral educa tion promotes gender equality or, conversely, reinforces traditional gender roles. The question posed here is how moral education can be evaluated from a gendered perspective. This research aims to systematically review and analyze existing research in Japan on moral education from a gender per spective to reveal an underlying ambivalent relationship between moral education and gender. The review was conducted through a search on CiNii Research, complemented by additional ex ploration using a snowballed methodology. The systematic review reveals the merits and pitfalls of moral education. On the positive side, moral education as performed in a class can contribute to the advancement of gender equality as it addresses themes such as gender bias and sexual/gender diversity. Studies of moral education classes suggest that the incorporation of gender-sensitive ap proaches within moral education may encourage a more equitable society. However, gender equality may not be achieved with the abundance of currently utilized classroom materials that limit pro gressive learning about the gender-bias. Such materials include textbooks as well as supplementary readers of moral education in which representative lessons serve to perpetuate gender biases with an underrepresentation of women and sexual/gender minorities, as well as the reinforcement of tra ditional gender roles. This review identifies three critical unresolved issues regarding studies on moral education and gender. First, the challenge of how to construct more gender-sensitive teaching from the gender biased textbooks and supplementary readers needs to be sufficiently explored. Second, there is a relative scarcity of research on moral development theory and the effectiveness of moral education practices, particularly in relation to gender. Third, there is a lack of historical analysis in research that examines moral education’s long-standing relationship with gender issues. The future for the issue of moral education in Japan is to actualize research; to see it address the above mentioned unresolved issues.
