The purpose of this paper is to identify gender differences in the presence or absence of knowledge about working conditions and to examine the pathological phenomenon in the teaching profession. Data were taken from a web survey conducted among university students across Japan who are (or have been) in a teaching course of study. The findings of this paper are as follows: First, there is a gender difference in the presence or absence of knowledge about working condi tions. Women tend to have less knowledge than men. This tendency is particularly prevalent with respect to knowledge about salary. Second, gender difference tends to increase after university lectures and teaching practice. This is especially true regarding knowledge of salary. This indicates that gender differences in knowledge may emerge within the teaching profession. In previous studies, it has been pointed out that to ameliorate the pathological phenomenon within the teaching profession, it is necessary to transfer knowledge so as to resist harsh working environ ments and to form resistance groups. However, as revealed in this paper, there is a gender difference regarding the presence or absence of knowledge about working conditions. To develop effective resistance groups, these gender differences need to be fully taken into account. |
