In order to explore this problem, three different designs of analysis are attempted; (a) to describe the changing processes of social attitudes during adolescence, i. e., from the first to the sixth grade years of education, (b) to compare the changing processes among subgroups divided on the developmental level of significant attitude, and (c) to examine the structural changes of social attitude on the basis of factor analysis. The social attitudes for the present study consist of three scales : conservative, radical, and mass-social. The subjects are 70 boys and 70 girls in the attached schools of the Faculty of Education of Nagoya University. The longitudinal data are obtained over six years by monitoring once a year the same group of students, as they proceed from the first grade to the sixth grade in their secondary and high school education. They started the school in different years (in 1972,1973 and 1974) and graduated 6 years later (in 1977,1978 and 1979 respectively), but they are combined into a single group for the purpose of analysis. The results of analysis are as follows. A. Based on the descriptive analysis of the longitudinal data : 1) For girls, the mass-social attitude tends to be stronger with increasing age. 2) The intercorrelations of the mass-social scale measured over six monitoring years are significantly high for boys. For girls, the same intercorrelations for three scales, the conservative, the radical and the mass-social, are also significantly high over six years. 3) For all subjects, the correlations between conservative and radical scores are found significantly negative, and the correlations between conservative and mass-social scores are significantly positive over six years. B. To compare the processes of change for the subsequent time periods, subjects were divided into three subgroups (High, Middle and Low) based on the developmental level of mass-social attitude score of the first grade. 1) The original differences among three groups established in the first grade on the level of mass-social attitude are maintained over six years of adolescence in the school. 2) For conservative attitude, no difference is found among these groups during the first grade, but girls' groups start to differentiate gradually from the third grade. C. The results on factor analysis : 1) The factor analysis produced the following four dimensions. They are labeled as (I) mass-social conformity, (II) conservativism vs. democratic spirit, (III) authoritarianism and political indifferentism, (IV) traditional values. 2) The magnitude of factor loadings is found stable for all factors except the traditional values across the six time periods. 3) The intercorrelations within the scale measured over six time periods are found stable for all factors.
