In this paper we reported 5 cases of adolescent school refusal, and examined the meanings of working of a part-time job in the light of clinical adolescent psychology. Case A was a third-grade boy of a junior high school and had not been attending school since in the first grade. Counseling sessions with his mother were held 12times. He failed in the entrance examination of a senior high school and began to deliver the evening editions of newspapers as a part-time job. Shortly he began to deliver the morning editions of newspapers and to collect bills. In the next year, he entered a private high school, and he is getting along very well now. Case B, a male student in the first grade of a senior high school, was already temporarily absent from school. He and his father came to ask for a certificate to absent himself from school temporarily. We had consultations with him and his father 2times at an interval of 6months. He had decided to withdraw from school temporarily and begun to deliver both the morning and the evening editions of papers. By means of overcoming pains of delivering papers without mistakes, he gained confidence in his own moral energy and bodily strength. Later he returned to school and leads a happy school life everyday. Case C was a male student in the first grade of a senior high school. His bodily symptoms appeared soon after he entered a technical high school. His school refusal gradually occurred and became worse. Counseling sessions with his mother were held 23times. As a part-time job he worked in the sign-maker's shop for 5months. After 2years later than other students he entered an evening high school and leads a school life vigorously presently. Case D, 16years and 11months old, was a school dropout. We had counseling sessions with him 10times and his parent or parents 15times. After leading an idle life for about 6months, he began to work in the dry cleaner of futon (Japanese bedding). He experienced the severity of his place of work and the acceptive and cooperative human relationships. After that period, he worked as a resident apprenticed plasterer. He tells that he will make a living by an independent plasterer in future. Case E, a male student in the second grade of a senior high school, was absent from school acutely at the end of the first grade. Counseling sessions with his mother were held 27times for 13months. After that time counseling sessions with himself were held 13times for 4months. Spontaneously he began to deliver newspapers. He talked about the difficulties and the pleasures of delivering newspapers in the rainy days or in the falling snow days. He began to attend to school after 2years' absence. However he fell into school refusal in May again. Accordingly the counseling with his mother is presently held again. The considerations from the view points of clinical adolescent psychology were done upon the following 3points. 1. The possession of one's body by means of working. The part-time jobs in which 5clients were engaged were delivering newspapers (3cases) and the assistances of the signmaker's shop (1case) or the dry cleaner of futon (1case). They awoke themselves early in the morning and, moreover, worked promptly and forcibly without giving up. Their experiences of working facilitated to achieve the adolescent task of encountering and possessing their bodies. 2. The meaning of their places of work as intermediating areas. The human relationships in their places of work were significant as the intermediating social human relationships between the family life and the school life. Moreover it is remarkable that they found their jobs almost spontaneously by themselves. They utilize the intermediating area as a step of their self-establishment. 3.
