For constructing self-image scales, 31 adjective pairs were carefully selected by reviewing both the Masculinity-Feminity (M-F) and Humanity aspects related to sex-role studies, and the structural dimensions concerning person perception commonly known as Evaluation (E), Potency (P), and Activity (A). Adjective pairs selected were put into 7-point semantic differential scales, and subjects were asked to evaluate (1) the occupational self-image, and (2) their desired female image as co-workers on the job, by using these SD scales. Whereas, for the social-role attitudes, 31 statements with 7-point scales were presented to describe liberal as well as traditional ideas about female roles in the society, especially about family, occupational, and citizens' roles for the female. Based on the total sample consisting of male and female college students (n=621), full-time working women (n=570), and the spouse of the married female workers (n=214), factor analyses were performed for each instrument. Occupational self-image produced four factors, which articulated the M-F-H sex-role aspects and E. P. A. dimensions into separate but meaningful factors. The first potency factor was characterized by a set of adjective pairs pertaining to the M-F and P dimensions. Second, an affinity factor was found connecting the Humanity with E dimensions, while a combination of the Humanity and A dimensions produced an outgoingness factor. Finally, a delicacy factor was the product of combining the M-F with E dimensions. The above four-factor pattern of occupational self-image was found quite stable across different sample groups. Moreover, analyses for the desired female image yielded basically the same results as those for the self-image. Next, social-role attitudes were summarized into three factors. The first factor named equality in social participation indicated the necessity of equal involvement for the female in occupation, politics and other social role areas. The second factor addressed itself to traditionalism of domestic functions for the female, while the third factor was found describing equality in the division of household labor. Items contributing to each factor were combined into a composite scale. Reliability estimates calculated based on Cronbach's alpha produced coefficients with satisfactory high levels. Then, in order to examine characteristics of scales constructed, they were subject to the correlational analysis for their interrelational patterns. Result of the analysis can be summarized as follows. (1) Potency for occupational self-image showed significant correlations with the equality-social role attitude (r=.17 for working women and r=.29 for female students), while the affinity self-image tended to be associated with more strongly with traditionalism of female social roles. (2) Potency as a desired female image was found highly correlated with egalitarian attitudes toward female roles. On the other hand, affinity showed positive correlations not only with traditionalism, but also with egalitarianism. This posed some dilemma for the women's positions in the contemporary Japanese society. (3) Among working women, both the potency self-image and egalitarian social-role attitudes exhibited significant positive correlations (r=.35 and r=.27 respectively) with a measure of the quality of work experience, i. e., the level of experiencing worthwhile work on the job. This result implies a significant impact upon the potency self-image and egalitarian social-role attitudes for the female, deriving from the quality of their occupational lives that are determined primarily by the factors surrounding their work environments.
